Safety Switch Tripped Off?

Has your power gone “off” but your lights remain “on” (or visa versa)? It may be that your safety switch has tripped “off”.
Follow these instructions to reset.

Firstly, locate your switchboard and find the tripped switch. It is most likely a little larger than the rest of the trip switches (called circuit breakers) and will be either labelled “safety switch”, RCD (residual current device) or possibly ELCB (earth leakage circuit breaker). Once you’ve located your safety switch and ascertained that it has tripped “off”, follow these simple instructions to reset the device.

Step 1.
Attempt to reset RCD ie. Switch back "ON"

- RCD resets OK (go to step 7) - RCD won't reset (go to step 2)

Step 2.
Switch "OFF" AND Unplug all appliances from power points.
Attempt to reset RCD ie. Switch back "ON"

- RCD resets OK (go to step 6) - RCD won't reset (go to step 3)

Step 3.
Turn "OFF" protected circuit breakers (usually labeled & adjacent the RCD)
Attempt to reset RCD ie. Switch back "ON"

- RCD resets OK (go to step 5) - RCD won't reset (go to step 4)

Step 4.
Contact your electrician for advise and service

Step 5.
Turn protected circuit breakers back "ON" one at a time.
If only one circuit breaker appears to effect the RCD,

- Leave this circuit breaker "OFF", then, - Reset RCD ie. Switch back "ON" to restore power to other circuits. - Contact your electrician for advise and service.

Step 6.
Plug appliances back in, one at a time. Faulty appliance may re-trip RCD.

- Leave faulty appliance/s uplugged for disgard/repair, - Reset RCD and monitor. Report any further problems to your electrician.

Step 7.
Monitor RCD and contact your electrician if problems persist.
